For many, marketing isn’t fun. Not only do you need to know exactly who your ideal clients are, when you market you must be clear on what you value and you must be clear about your values. If you’ve ever felt something is “off” when you’re creating your messages you might not be completely clear on your core values and how they must work with your personal mission and your business mission. If that’s the case, know it’s common and it’s a process to get clear on this.
Your values are the essence of who you are personally and professionally. Often marketers struggle with this because they haven’t taken the time to really examine their values so they can be clear on their BIG mission and how it all ties together. The reason why values matter in marketing is because they serve as the core foundation to creating your mission statement and carrying out your vision. Plus, when you base everything on your true values it’s much easier to create marketing messages with integrity that connect with your ideal clients.
I’ve found that it’s essential to be absolutely clear about our values, our personal mission and our business mission. They must work together in order for you to be in full alignment with your purpose. From there you can move on to choosing the right clients instead of chasing (or accepting misbehavior) from not so ideal clients.
Having your values and mission in place helps you get clear on your vision. I break it down like this:
• We need to know what matters most to us (values)
• We need to be clear about what we do in the world personally and professionally (mission)
• We need to have a big picture perspective on how we want to facilitate change (vision)
This is true personally and professionally. I revisit these three areas at least once a year and have a process that helps me get really clear and also refine direction if necessary. I’ve included this process in my new program How to Create Marketing Messages With Integrity: Attract Your Ideal Clients With Your Authentic Voice. After working with hundreds of clients to create marketing messages this is one area that requires extra support. Do you know what your core values are? Have you used them to create your personal and professional mission statement so you can carry out your BIG vision?
