Are you allowing your own success or pushing it away?

Rate yourself on a scale from 1-5 on the following descriptions,
with 1 being “almost never” to 5 being “almost always.”

1. I read self-help books but they don’t seem to make a lasting
difference in my life.

2. I’m frustrated by my financial situation.

3. My job doesn’t allow me to express my real level of talent or
true abilities.

4. I expect myself to be perfect all the time.

5. I try to be all things to all people.

6. I often find myself starting projects and not finishing them.

7. I’m tired of getting close to success and then sabotaging
myself.

8. I usually feel like I’m not doing enough, even when I’m doing
all I can.

9. I feel responsible for everyone else’s feelings.

10. I often let others win, even when I could easily win.

11. When I start to get close to success, that’s when the fear sets
in.

12. I tend to have a low opinion of myself, even though other
people say I’m smart, caring and capable.

13. I tend undercharge for my services (if I own my own business)
or see other people getting promoted ahead of me (if I work in a
company).

14. I usually settle for crumbs, even though I know I deserve
better.

If you scored

14-28: Congratulations! You’ve given yourself
permission to succeed. You have no trouble letting in your own
success and taking credit for your accomplishments. Others look to
you as an example in personal and business relationships.

Score 29-49: You’re stopping your success to some degree. Take the
time to acknowledge your own successes and be sure to take time for
relaxation and self-care.

Score 50 or above: You are probably stopping yourself from being as
successful as you know you’re capable of. You often find it
difficult to finish projects you start or put off doing the things
you really enjoy.

How to Stop Pushing Your Success Away

In Permission To Succeed, I lay out a seven-step process to
reverse success anorexia and give yourself permission to succeed.
Here are a few tips you can begin today:

Identify your Loving Mirrors.

A Loving Mirror is someone who can see you for who you really are,
someone who can love and support you unconditionally. While this
may sound “touchy-feely,” we all need the loving encouragement of
someone like a coach, teacher, or mentor to become all we can be.

Make a list of the people in your life who can offer you
unconditional support. Then do something really weird: call them
and ask them for their support. You’ll be shocked at how many
people will say “yes.” (For more resources to help you find Loving
Mirrors, click to http://SuccessClinic.com )

Become willing to succeed.

Few people realize that what we want is also what we fear. If
you’re afraid of success, no matter how many “how-to’s” of success
you know, you still won’t let yourself succeed.

How to reverse this? Try doing a Ben Franklin on yourself.
Whenever Benjamin Franklin had a difficult decision to make, he
would make a list of the pros and cons of the decision on a piece
of paper. You can do the same thing with success.

What could possibly be a drawback to succeeding? For one
thing, you may have to face your fear of the unfamiliar or people
being jealous of you. Another possibility is that others may
expect more of you once you start to let yourself succeed.

List the drawbacks and benefits of success and you can take
the first step to facing – and overcoming – the fear of success.

Establish Goal-Free Zones.

A Goal-Free Zone is a time and place where you don’t do
anything. So many of us are overwhelmed by our “to-do” lists every
day that we can get to the end of the day and feel we’ve
accomplished nothing, even though we’ve been running around like
idiots all day.

I encourage my students around the world to establish Goal-Free
Zones, because that way we learn that the world won’t end if we
take time for ourselves. This can be one of the hardest steps for
people who are used to doing everything for others and feeling
guilty when they do something “selfish.” We are victims of
circumstances within our control.

Stopping yourself from the success you’re capable of means
you’re not sharing your true gifts with the rest of humanity. Yet
the world hungers for — and rewards — people with the courage to
express their True Selves. Use the steps above to stop pushing away
the success you want and are capable of achieving, and let your
light shine in a world that so desperately needs it.
