In Chinese philosophy, there is the concept we know as yin and yang. Very simply put, it’s the idea that opposites only exist in relation to each other. The outer circle represents “everything”, while the black and white shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two energies. Notice, they are not completely black or white, just as things in life are not completely black or white, and they cannot exist without each other. Here in the West we often think of Yin and Yang as being dualistic, masculine and
feminine, but in the Tao they are seen as complementary and interdependent.

When we apply the principles of yin and yang to our goals, hopes and dreams, we are able to create success with more creativity, fun and ease and less stress, overwhelm and exhaustion.

Here are 5 Simple Steps to the Yin & Yang of Success:

Receive Daily. Yin. We are so conditioned to spend all of our time “getting”, (yang) it’s easy to forget about simply receiving. Consistently and graciously receiving is not a requirement for success, it just allows the journey to be easier. Allow yourself to receive compliments, help, guidance, support, invitations, inspiration, opportunities, and any other goodies that come your way.
When you feel yourself pushing or struggling, that’s your cue to stop and check-in, and ask if you are allowing yourself to receive enough today?

Commit to One Consistent Daily Action. Yang. Success, and life itself, is a process, not an event. While change is great, too much at one time can be overwhelming and lead to burn out and stopping and starting. What is ONE THING that you can do daily that is going to move you forward? Pick something and stick with it for at least 3 weeks straight.

Let Go of One Thing. Yin. Obligations and mundane tasks, can eat up your time and your energy. So do damaging emotional habits like worry, comparison, fear and doubt. Ask yourself on a daily basis: “What can I let go of today?” This will free up enormous amounts of time and emotional and creative energy. (Hint: even 15 minutes a day adds up to 7.5 hours per month!)

Try New Things. Yang. It’s easy to get into a routine, or what I like to refer to as “the comfort rut”. Weekly, make a point to learn
something new, study with a new coach or mentor, read a book, (yes, a whole book) try a different restaurant, bar, gym, grocery
store or even route to and from work. Continually seek to expand your world and your perspective in new and different ways.

Think Big and Take Small Steps. Yang + Yin. As much as outward expansion, big ideas and a broad perspective are important, so is the ability to clearly focus and hone in on the smaller details. Perspective with focus is a crucial combination in creating our future and our lives by design. This week, see if you notice a shift as you approach your life or career from a place of giving and receiving, doing and allowing – a little yin and yang.
