Last month, I detailed my journey and missteps into coming home. I also promised the free spirits that I would give them a plan to start their own journey. Coming home to me, means a lifestyle centered around home and family and faith. After all, who better to work with than those you love the most. An ideal family based business is one that you are excited about, does not create tension or strife (not to be confused with differences of opinions), and actually makes your family money.
Step 1 is the most important step. It is generating enthusiasm and excitement. You want to be able to say, ‘I can’t believe we get paid to do this, it is so much fun!’
In order to generate the excitement in your family I would encourage reviewing the following book together either by reading it aloud to your kids at family time, or listening to it on tape at quiet reading time.
My children and I have just finished the wonderful audio book entitled The Toothpaste Millionaire. It is a wonderful story of two young entrepreneurs and their journey to compete in the world of the toothpaste business. Our family gives it five stars all around for creativity, humor, and fun learning. One day, two kids are sent to the store to buy toothpaste, the next day they are in business.
Not only does it create an enthusiasm for the product-toothpaste, but it is also teaching the listeners that being an entrepreneur is an adventure. The main characters inspire their fellow math students to apply their lessons to the business world-a challenge that we can easily accept too.
I hope you enjoy it too. For it is your homework.
Listen to this as a family to see how a simple problem is solved by two enterprising kids and how they turn adversity into opportunity. Which main character are you more like? The more logical Rufus, or the creative Kate?
